In celebration of our 30th Anniversary, we’ve teamed up with good friends and close neighbours Universal Works to produce a tight capsule collection that pays homage to our past.
The project came about after sharing tea & biscuits and an archive of imagery dating back three decades with Uni Works founder and designer David Keyte.
David became excited by a set of Kid Acne character illustrations that haven’t seen the light of day since we used them on on the shop front and an old carrier bag design back in 2001. With a keen eye for detail and a depth of production knowledge, David came back from a trip to the factories with samples of embroidered fabrics featuring the characters in different sizes and positions; like a phoenix from the ashes they were reborn into a fully-fledged mix-match set of t-shirts, shorts, jacket and cap.
Kid Acne is a UK-based illustrator, printmaker and emcee who spent his formative years writing graffiti, making music and creating cult-followed fanzines; during this time he became a good friend of the shop through shared common interests and subcultures. Since then he’s worked with the likes of Levi’s, Kenzo, Montana Colors, WARP, XL Recordings, Kid Robot, IKEA & Mercedes Benz (to name a few). He’s held numerous solo exhibitions around the world and is now revered as a stalwart of the international street-art movement.
This collaboration utilises Universal Works’ cotton-twill fabric that is synonymous with the brand, featuring Kid Acne’s characters hand-embroidered in an all-over motif across the shorts/jacket/cap combo and linked up in their original state 360º around the chest and back of the 100% cotton jersey t-shirt. Silhouettes include the Universal Works relaxed fit coach jacket, oversized shorts, 6 panel cap and classic t-shirt. It’s great to go on a journey, and even better with good friends.
The Universal Works x Wellgosh capsule collection launches in store tomorrow (04/08/18) at 9.30am and online at midday the same day.
