Behind The Design
AIR MAX 1 POMPIDOU DAY / NIGHT
In 1987, the Centre Pompidou in Paris—with its ground breaking inside-out aesthetic—became the muse behind Tinker Hatfield’s most revolutionary idea: visible Nike Air cushioning. Find out how two soon-to-be-released designs take Air Max 1 to a whole new place—by taking it back to its roots.
On the AM1 Pompidou By Day, coloured lines to flow along the contours of its panels, just like the painted pipes that highlight the structure of the iconic Centre Pompidou. Two OG Air Max 1 colours reference the shoe’s beginnings, with University Red lines on the mudguard and Royal Blue on the swoosh.
The ‘by Night’ version of the shoe goes full-on greyscale—with metallic silver detailing reflecting the way the building glints in the city after dark. The translucent outsoles on both shoes cleverly reveal more colourful pipe motifs as well as a unique logo, designed especially for this model. Made up of three ‘P’s, it stands for Paris, Pompidou and pipes.
With such a long and rich history behind this shoe’s concept, many design avenues were explored—from pipes along every panel to full colour-blocking. In the end, the subtle lines let the iconic AM1 silhouette speak for itself, and the premium materials throughout reflect the status of the shoe—and that of its original inspiration.
The Nike Air Max 1 'Pompidou' Day/Night Pack will be releasing at Wellgosh.com from 08:00 (BST) on Thursday 20th September 18.
